Caring for your puppy
Quick Start Guide
Taking Care of your Chihuahua Dog
Everything you need to know to properly care for your new puppy
Food needs
A Chihuahua’s food intake should be closely monitored and limited to 1/2 cup of kibble per day. Split the dog’s meals into two or three, and opt for high-protein dog food designed for small dogs. This miniature dog has a tiny stomach and is likely to overeat, which may lead to serious health problems.
We recommend Nuvet because:
It strengthens the immune system.
It promotes healthy skin and coat
Reduces itching and scratching
Supports ear and eye health
Improves digestion
Supports cardiovascular health
Grooming needs
Chihuahuas do not require much aside from regular baths.
Chihuahuas do not need hair cuts as their hair will stop growing when it gets to the right length which may vary.
Regular brushing of teeth not only helps with bad breath and cavities but can lead to tooth rotting, and needing to be pulled.
Amazon sells a finger glove for brushing their teeth and a peanut butter flavor tooth past and they also sell the toothbrush meant for small dogs.
Exercise needs
Provide your Chihuahua with a maximum of 30 minutes of exercise per day, including walks and play. As small dogs with little legs, the breed should never be over-exercised or forced too quickly.
Due to their low exercise needs and small size, Chihuahuas are suitable for apartment living and make good companions for older people or people with mobility issues.
Mental needs
Miniature Chihuahuas are intelligent, attention-seeking dogs that require at least 30 minutes of mental stimulation per day. The dogs seek approval, companionship, and love, so they enjoy one-on-one playtime with their owners. Hide and seek, tug-of-war, and find-the-treat are all good games to play with a teacup Chihuahua.
